How to know which Major Scale to play?

Asks how to choose major scale positions for soloing over G–C–D and whether to shift positions or stay put while targeting chord tones.

Excerpt from the original

So I have currently learnt all the major scales in all the positions. Now, when I'm playing a solo for example, how do I decide which position to begin playing in. For example, if the backing track goes G Major, C Major then D Major, should I be playing the G section in the 1st position (ie third fret) or playing it elsewhere. Or if I choose to play the G in the 1st position, how do I know whether to drop down to the 3rd position to play for the C major or stay on the 1st position to focus on the C notes. I am aware I may not have explained that very well but it was the best I could do. All help will be appreciated!
